ABOUT
Derek Young was born and raised in Sudbury. At the age of 40, he brings 20 years of advocacy and community development experience and a creative, collaborative, entrepreneurial and fiscally responsible spirit to council. He believes that the betterment of the lives of all citizens of Greater Sudbury will best be achieved by empowering city departments, committees, staff, elected officials, community action networks and citizen groups to work together in a manner that is cooperative and inclusive.

Current President of Theatre Cambrian, leading that organization through significant changes in its operations. By providing strong fiscal management and forging cooperative community partnerships, he is helping secure the future of Theatre Cambrian by making it more resilient, responsible and sustainable.

Professionally
Young is self-employed. Nationally he works in venues across Canada, in events management and marketing. His clients include The President's Choice SuperDogs, Knights of Valour, Little Ray's Reptile Zoo, and the Canadian Raptor Conservancy. Locally, he is the coordinator for the Reading Town Sudbury Ville Lecture Festival, which has been responsible for increasing local literacy through numerous Free Little Libraries and Story Time Trails being strategically placed throughout Greater Sudbury.

Prior to be being self employed, he worked for a number of non profit agencies including the United Way, Lung Association, Flour Mill BIA and Alzheimer Sociery in various fundraising, event planning and marketing roles.
In his profession, Derek has learned the importance of functioning at "enterprise level" and being "fully orchestrated".
